The Combat history of OH-6 66-14401
This particular Loach, tail number 66-14401, was delivered to the U.S. Army in February 1968 and quickly deployed to South Vietnam. Over its combat life, it survived multiple enemy engagements — a rare feat for a helicopter that often flew “nap-of-the-earth” missions just above the treetops.
Timeline of a living legend
June 12, 1968 – Baptism by Fire
While flying with the 355th Aviation Company, 66-14401 took a hit from an explosive weapon during a combat reconnaissance mission at only 200 feet altitude. Despite fuel system damage, the crew completed their mission and returned safely — earning its first battle scar.
July 11, 1968 – Shot Down but Repaired
One month later, flying night reconnaissance with OPM SEA NITEOPS, the helicopter came under 7.62mm automatic weapons fire, striking the fuselage and rotor system. The aircraft made an emergency landing and burned, but was later recovered and rebuilt in theater — a testament to both the resilience of the machine and the determination of its crew.
January 20, 1970 – Nine Hits, Two Wounded
In its final documented engagement with the 303rd Transportation Company, 66-14401 took nine rounds of small-arms fire, damaging the engine, transmission, and control systems. Two crew members were wounded, but the helicopter stayed airborne long enough to divert and land safely — a nearly miraculous escape that added to its legend.

“Absolutely an AMAZING experience from start to finish! Our pilot – Chris – was super friendly and an absolute PRO at his profession! You can tell he has a true passion for what he does. From booking/scheduling, confirmations and even accommodating small changes along the way were a breeze. Chris was hit with our daughters and did not hesitate every second of the flight with any of their conversation/questions. He really made it special!!! You have to take a helicopter tour of Chicago and you HAVE TO use Chris at (the REAL) Heli Chicago!!!!
“Our pilot Wayne and Sara were beyond spectacular and had a good variety of jokes. They were very polite and punctual which was appreciated. I felt very calm with their presence and they made me feel completely relaxed and not worried for the flight. I was very nervous but they reassured me that everything would be smooth. The ride was beautiful and the pilots completed the experience.
